John Lutz: Overview of Skills, Abilities,
Education, Work History and Accomplishments

I definitely have quite a different background and set of skills than most applicants. The below information is my best attempt to effectively describe these skills (most of which are very hard to define on paper or a web page). These highly essential business skills allow me to easily generate outstanding financial and business process improvement results for all of my employers. These skills have been well-proven during 13 years of employment with two different Fortune 500 companies and during my recent, highly successfully work as the Internet Marketing Director (and unofficial VP of Marketing/CIO) of an alternative medicine school, medical clinic, wellness spa and nutritional supplements company. 4. Powerful Business Skill #2:  I see business trends much faster than most people. I can provide many clear and convincing examples of this:
    1. Natural Healthcare:
      1. In 1986, I switched college majors from engineering to Dietetics to learn how to maintain health with nutrition. I switched from learning how to build structures to learning how the body works, and how to support bodily processes with nutrition-based methods.
        1. From 1994 to 1998, I obtained Doctorate level knowledge of the field of Alternative Medicine - through non-traditional methods (not fully described here).
          1. In 1994, I located and completed an outstanding alternative medicine training course (and received a 100% score of the cumulative final exam).
            1. In 2000, the Senior Editor of the course was appointed by President Clinton in to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.
              1. In 2003, he was appointed by President Bush's administration to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee.
                1. From 2003 to 2006 (present), he's developed what is now, unquestionably, the top web site in the field of nutrition based medicine.
        2. In 1994, the PhD Department Chair of the Dietetics Program at the University of California, Northridge (Los Angeles) told me that she did not feel that nutritional supplements were of significant need. Also, she did not feel that taking supplemental vitamin C was necessary, nor was it a “confirmed-safe” decision. She was of course way off, and I recognized this at the time.
          1. By 2000, 1 in 7 Americans (15%) were taking vitamin C on a regular basis (National Nutritional Foods Assoc., 2000).
            1. In 2002, the highly conservative Journal of the American Medical Association stated that all adults should take a multivitamin and mineral formula.
              1.  Now, in 2006 over 2/3rds of the population use nutritional supplements, and 85% of the population (including medical professionals) believe that using nutritional supplements will keep them healthier (National Marketing Institute, 2005).
        3. In 1994, I started working for Whole Foods Market.
          1. From 1995 to 2005, sales of organic food in the U.S. grew 20% or more annually.
            1. In 1997, more than 60 percent of total organic food sales in the US were sold by Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats (a smaller competitor; Gilmore, 1998)
              1. In 1998, the Whole Foods Market became the largest natural and organic foods retailer in the world.
                1. In 2005, Whole Foods Market became a Fortune 500 company.
                  1. From 1998 to 2006 (present) Whole Foods Market was voted a Top 100 Company to Work For by Fortune magazine.
                  2. In 2006, sales of organic food are expected to surpass $25 billion.
                    (The Organic Trade Association, 2005).
                  3. In 2006, Whole Foods Market is now commonly featured in articles of many major newspapers.
        4. In 2005, I moved 3000 miles (and back - a third time, see below) to pursue additional direct studies with another top alternative medicine physician - likely the top practicing alternative medicine physician in the country (stated based on 12 years experience working in the field).
          1. In 2006, I'm presently working on a new (large scale) web site with one of my web teachers from school to share this information very effectively with consumers.
    2. Martial Arts:
      1. In 1986, I identified an incredible martial arts instructor. He also had an undergraduate degree in Engineering and a Master’s degree in computer science. I received my Black Belt (in the second fastest time ever, 6 years - 6 months longer than the instructor; from a real martial arts school, not a commercial business, only 7 Black Belts were ever awarded).
        1. From 1988 to 1993, I traveled throughout the East Coast to train with experts from a variety of martial arts styles.
          1. In 1992, I sparred with an outstanding martial artist - who went on to develop what would become one of the world's most popular martial arts home training programs (see 1998).
            1. In 1993, I went on to train at the top kickboxing gym in the world (2) with the skills I had learned (moving 3000 miles to accomplish this goal). I trained with many world champion kickboxers and world-class martial artists (including many well-known on-screen martial artists).
              1. In 1997, yoga became a very popular workout trend in America
                1. In 1998, “Tae-Bo” became a very popular martial arts home workout.
                  1. In 2001, my initial martial arts instructor retired (from engineering) at the age of 41.
                    1. Presently, in 2006, many fitness gyms offer martial arts classes, and many colleges offer martial arts and/or self defense classes as courses for academic credit.
    3. Internet Marketing:
      1. Due to my martial arts interests and moving across country from DE to CA to train, I was a late adapter to computers – not because I did not recognize their importance, but because Whole Foods Market was teaching me incredible information on alternative healthcare (not being taught in Dietetics curriculums in the US) and I was learning martial arts from world-class instructors. I was studying and training quite a bit, my initial pay level at Whole Foods Market wasn’t great, computers were fairly expensive, and I had moved to CA primarily to train.
I purchased my first computer in 1999, after returning to the East coast.
        1. From 1999 to 2001, I made the transition from Whole Foods Market to CompUSA – working 35 hours per week at Top 10 sales volume stores at both of these Fortune 500 companies at the same time… for 8 months, with no days off. I received Employee of the Month awards at both companies during this time, working as a team member sales trainer at both companies.
        2. From 1999 to 2001, I took Microsoft certified classes in Computer and Internet related technologies at CompUSA.
          1. In 2001/02, I located a web design and Internet marketing curriculum that was emerging quickly as a program offering outstanding training in Internet and computer related technologies. My primary web instructor at the school graduated first in his class at UPenn’s Wharton Business school in management and marketing with a focus on e-business (Penn has the top rated marketing program in the country). He then received a Master’s degree with honors from Harvard. He taught me during his sophomore year at Penn. Other instructors there were also outstanding. At the time, I recognized that the training I was receiving was truly outstanding.
          2. In 2002, after graduating with the highest score in the class on the cumulative final exam (102.5%), I took an 8 month leave of absence from Whole Foods Market to further study the incredible Web Design and Internet Marketing material presented by these outstanding instructors (including books on E-Commerce from Penn's book store, mentioned as suggested reading items by my primary web instructor).
            1. In 2003, I again moved across country (3000 miles) to test and fully challenge my skills - this time, in the field of Internet Marketing. Seattle is the most advanced alternative healthcare city in the country. My goal was to further develop both my Internet Marketing skills and my knowledge of the field of alternative medicine.
            2. From 2003 to 2005 (less than two years' time), with my newly acquired skills and my truly outstanding ability to see trends before others, I was able to lead an alternative medicine school’s web site from non-functional (outdated content, ineffective brand image, non-functional shopping cart, less than 10 visitors per day; Ayurvedaonline.com) to a Top 75,000 site on the Internet – with over 150,000 page views per month and a site ranking higher than over 99.94% of all web sites on the Internet (in spite of many major work and non-work obstacles; ranking source: Alexa.com, owned by Amazon).
              1. Over 90% of the web traffic was generated without any form of paid advertising.
              2. All of the traffic results were generated without paid search engine submissions and without incoming link generation efforts.
              3. New student enrollments increased 3 to 4 fold during this time.
              4. Total sales generated through Internet Marketing efforts: over $500,000.
              5. I had all systems in place (I wrote a powerful affiliate program, designed original incoming link generation tools and developed other programs more powerful than these) to easily and unquestionably lead the site to a Top 5000 or Top 1000 site ranking on the Internet.
              6. In 2005, I identified the essential Internet Marketing skill/marketing program required for leading any site with significant content, products or services to a Top 1000 ranking on the Internet (or higher) - over 50 million page views per month.
                1. This is the primary skill/marketing program required for achieving this result, and it is unknown and unachievable by almost all "Internet Marketing Experts" - a glaring weakness in their skills and marketing efforts (fully stated here with a factual, not boastful intent).
                  1. Presently, in 2006, I'm fully prepared to lead any site with significant content, products, and/or services to a Top 5000 or Top 1000 site ranking on the Internet - the objective currently stated on my resume. See how to attain a Top 1000 site ranking on the Internet and over 50 million page views per montnt.
                  2. Unquestionably, the primary factors enabling success in business and in the rapidly changing field of Internet Marketing are the abilities to:
                    1. Accurately identify emerging business trends,
                    2. Act quickly and decisively with this information,
                    3. Capitalize on the trends, by "getting there first", and
                    4. "Learn as you go" - figure out how to overcome future, related challenges as they present themselves. See Powerful Intangible Skill #3, below.
  5. Powerful Business Skill #3: The ability to “get there first” and “excel in unknown territory”.
    1. On my father’s side, one relative discovered (or co-discovered) the North Pole (Frederick Cook in 1908), and another relative had one of the most distinguished careers shaping the history of the American West, as a soldier in the Civil War, as Chief of Scouts for the US Army, and later as an entertainer with his “Wild West Show” (Col. William “Buffalo Bill” Cody; 1917; awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor – the nation’s highest military honor for bravery). His primary responsibility was leading the way into unknown, uncharted (and often hostile) territory.
    2. On my mother’s side, my great uncle (Charles Klauder, 1938) was a self-taught architect who designed buildings for Princeton, Cornell, Yale, Wellesley, the University of Pennsylvania (incl. Franklin Field and The Palestra), the University of Pittsburgh (incl. The Cathedral of Learning, the tallest academic building in the Western hemisphere) and many other East coast universities - some of the most beautiful and most impressive buildings in the US. He was likely the most prolific college architect of the 20th century.
    3. Individual and cumulative results of the 15 objective PhD developed tests posted on my personal profile web page (and my current, highly advanced knowledge of the fields of natural healthcare and Internet marketing) strongly confirm that I possess similar skills to those of my highly successful, innovative, resourceful relatives... including the ability to ‘get there first’ and ‘excel in unknown territory’ - vitally important skills in the business world (1). Additional examples of these skills, related skills, and work related accomplishments are listed below.
  6. Powerful Business Skill #4: I have an engineer’s mind.
    1. My father is an engineer, my uncle is an engineer, my best friend is an engineer, and I took 2 years of engineering in college before switching majors.
    2. Engineers analyze data and figure out how to do things – including new ways of doing things.
      1. I’ve developed new, original, innovative methods of increasing web traffic and improving search results on search engines.
      2. I can reverse engineer any front end web code and/or marketing program I see on the Internet – and usually take the program up a few levels.
    3. Outstanding "abstract reasoning" skills: "The ability to think complexly and see relationships between ideas that are not easily apparent."
      1. "Advanced skill in grasping new ideas and assimilating new information."
      2. "Ability to understand concepts and assimilate new information beyond previous experience."
      3. "Advanced responsiveness to training, and a greater capacity to put training to good use."
      4. "A high level of 'natural ability' (1,2,3,4)."
      5. My answers on abstract reasoning tests occasionally go beyond the level being evaluated in standard IQ tests - as was the case in link #2 above (resulting in a 97 out of 100 score). My ability in the area is surely in the 99.9 percentile of the population.
      6. *This skill allows me to easily identify business trends and business opportunities which are not readily apparent to others.*
    4. Outstanding "numerical reasoning" skills: "The ability to use numbers in a logical and rational way."
      1. "Advanced skill enabling quick reasoning with numbers, the ability to solve computations with relative ease, recognition and ability in numerical transformations and relationships between numbers (1,2)."
      2. *This skill, along with highly advanced "abstract reasoning" skills and an"engineer's mind" and allow me to easily identify ways of significantly increasing the operational effectiveness and sales effectiveness of any employer's business, calculate the projected effectiveness of these changes, and build and fully install these new, highly effective business systems.
  7. Powerful Business Skill #5: Highly Advanced Sales, Marketing/Internet Marketing, Writing and Usability Skills:
    1. I’ve worked at two of the highest volume retail companies in the US – Top 10 sales volume retail locations for 2 different Fortune 500 companies (Whole Foods Markets and CompUSA) – in two different high volume industries (food/natural healthcare/healthcare and computers/business support services). This experience included one-on-one interactions with over 100,000 consumers (during a total of 13 years’ time with these two companies), and taught me how to very effectively present product sales related information to consumers and business owners. This extensive experience, and the advanced level of sales skills I developed during this time, make “selling” page content as usable information to consumers very easy for me.
      1. Produced individual, department level and store level sales results recognized company wide by both Whole Foods Market and CompUSA (again, two different Fortune 500 companies in two different industries).
      2. 13 years of proven success in sales and leadership with two Fortune 500 companies in two different industries.
    2. Over 5 years experience and a proven high level of success selling product solutions to consumers and businesses in the $5000 to $10,000 range – for 1 Fortune 500 Company (CompUSA, where I sold computer related equipment, business services and Microsoft Certified educational courses) and as an Internet Marketing Director for a small to medium sized business (Ayurvedaonline.com, primarily an alternative medicine school).
      1. Since my work at Whole Foods Market was to “sell” consumers on natural, organic foods and natural healthcare, successful work in this capacity involved converting “one time shoppers” into “regular customers” who commonly would spend over $5000 per year at the store. So, I actually have over 15 years experience selling products in the $5,000 to $10,000 range.
      2. 5 years of proven success selling educational courses - from individual 1-day courses to Master’s degree programs.
    3. In January 2005, I received Employee of the Year for my work as Internet Marketing Director (and unofficial VP of Marketing/CIO) on Ayurvedaonline.com - the web site of an alternative medicine school, medical clinic, wellness spa, and nutritional supplements company.
      1. The owner of this school was formerly a Department Chair at the top alternative medicine school in the country (Bastyr University, founded by the doctor mentioned at the top of this document, who was also on the Board of Directors of this school).
      2. I was given the award based on:
        1. My significant success generating outstanding sales (including a 3-4 fold increase in new student enrollments over 2 years' time), and
        2. My significant success producing highly effective business process improvements for all four of the company's businesses.
